Gems and Jewellery News: Alrosa’s Historic Discovery Sets New Record

Russian mining powerhouse Alrosa has stunned the global diamond industry with the discovery of a colossal 468.30-carat amber-colored rough diamond in the republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Measuring 56 x 54 x 22 millimeters, this stunning gem is now the largest jewelry-grade diamond ever unearthed in Russia, surpassing the company’s previous 401-carat record set in 2013.

Alrosa CEO Pavel Marinychev heralded the find as one of the most significant milestones in the history of the country’s diamond industry. “Nature has once again gifted us an extraordinary treasure,” he said. “It is symbolic that such a find came during the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. We have named it ‘80 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War’ to honor the end of World War II.” This Gems and Jewellery News report marks a rare moment of triumph for the company as it navigates a turbulent global landscape shaped by sanctions and weakened demand.

A Year of Symbolic Surprises and Industry Shifts

The discovery comes only weeks after Alrosa introduced its previous crown jewel, the “New Sun”—a vivid-yellow polished diamond weighing over 100 carats, also a first in Russian gem-cutting history. The timing couldn’t be more significant. Alrosa is under intense global scrutiny due to international sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with restrictions biting into its financials. The company recently reported a 42% drop in first-quarter revenue, and profit fell by nearly 30%.

Still, the Russian government has stepped in, with Finance Minister Anton Siluanov suggesting state purchases of Alrosa diamonds to stabilize the company. Meanwhile, Alrosa is increasingly pivoting toward the Asian and Middle Eastern markets. Diamond exports to Hong Kong jumped 18-fold in early 2024, and Dubai is rising as a key trading hub.

Mir Mine Reopens in Strategic Push
Adding to the momentum is the reopening of the legendary Mir mine, one of Russia’s largest and most storied diamond sources. Closed in 2017 after a tragic flood killed eight workers, the mine has now been modernized with enhanced safety protocols and infrastructure upgrades. With a projected annual capacity of 2 million carats and a total investment of RUB 70 billion (USD 762 million), Alrosa aims to reach full output by 2030. The site is expected to remain productive until at least 2048.

Marinychev emphasized that the mine’s revival not only boosts production but secures jobs and strengthens Russia’s grip on the global diamond market. Currently, Alrosa commands 99.6% of Russia’s diamond output and nearly 30% of the world’s total supply, making it a central player in the industry despite geopolitical headwinds.

Why This Discovery Matters
This historic unearthing is more than just a geological marvel—it represents resilience, national pride, and a strategic pivot amid global isolation. With sanctions slowly taking hold and traditional markets in Europe tightening, Alrosa’s ability to uncover record-breaking stones and revive dormant operations may very well be the key to its survival. The 468-carat gem is not just the largest of its kind—it is a symbol of continuity in a fractured global economy and a diamond that could reshape Alrosa’s future.
