Gems and Jewelry News: A Stunning Tribute to Nature’s Rarest Jewels

The global fascination with colored diamonds has reached fever pitch as the Natural Diamond Council (NDC), in collaboration with the Choron Group and the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF), has released its first-ever Fancy Colour Diamond Report. Unveiled just as Paris Couture Week dazzles the world with the latest haute joaillerie creations, this unprecedented report is casting new light on what many consider Earth’s most exotic and luxurious treasures.

This Gems and Jewellery News report reveals that the timing of this release is no coincidence. As designers and luxury maisons converge in Paris to showcase their most opulent collections, an electric wave of excitement is pulsing through the industry thanks to a string of high-profile auctions, celebrity headlines, and one jaw-dropping discovery—a rare purple diamond unearthed at Canada’s Diavik mine. This singular gemstone is already being hailed as one of the most significant finds in recent memory, and it has reignited global interest in these highly coveted natural marvels.

A Billionaire Wedding and a Billion-Dollar Market

June 2025 has already proven to be a blockbuster month for fancy color diamonds. The legendary Marie-Thérèse Pink diamond, weighing 10.38 carats and believed to have ties to Queen Marie Antoinette, was sold at Christie’s New York for a staggering $14 million—double its pre-sale estimate. Not to be outdone, Sotheby’s saw intense bidding for a rare 5.02-carat fancy pink diamond ring valued between $1.5 to $2 million. Even Hollywood and tech elite got in on the action, with Lauren Sánchez flaunting a multi-million-dollar pink diamond ensemble at her Venice wedding to Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.

This cultural moment is emblematic of a broader trend: colored diamonds are no longer just adornments but powerful financial assets and status symbols. As David Kellie, CEO of the Natural Diamond Council, remarked, “Fancy colour diamonds are the ultimate expression of passion, desire, personal style and enduring value—no two are ever the same. We’re not talking about just jewels, we’re talking about a vibrant legacy of Earth’s ultimate power and beauty.”

Decoding the Allure of Colour

The newly released report dives deep into the geological, historical, and commercial significance of fancy colour diamonds. From vivid pinks and radiant blues to the elusive reds and greens, the document outlines the astonishing scarcity that gives these diamonds their mystique. For instance, only a handful of red diamonds larger than two carats are known to exist in the world.

The report goes further by analyzing price trends that reflect this rarity. Over the past 20 years, fancy colour diamond prices have increased at a compound annual growth rate of 5.7%. Pink diamonds have surged by a jaw-dropping 393.5%, blue diamonds by 242.4%, and yellow diamonds by 49.3%. Altogether, prices have skyrocketed by 205% since 2005—an impressive trajectory that underscores their value not just as luxury items, but as enduring investments.

A Kaleidoscope of Craftsmanship

Cutting a fancy colour diamond is an art form in itself. While traditional diamond cutting aims to maximize brilliance and clarity, fancy colour diamonds demand a more strategic approach. Here, the priority is to enhance the intensity and saturation of the gem’s hue.

“Fancy colour diamonds are an ultra-rare and highly esteemed segment of the market that demands a profound understanding of craftsmanship and gemmology,” said Anshul Gandhi, CEO of Choron Group. “With decades of technical expertise, Choron works closely with collectors, investors, and luxury brands for the full spectrum of fancy colour diamonds… transforming nature’s rarest creations into timeless works of art.”

Mapping the Mines Behind the Magic

Despite their rising popularity and astronomical value, fancy colour diamonds remain extraordinarily rare. They comprise just 0.01% of all natural diamonds mined. The majority are sourced from a few select regions, including Canada, Botswana, South Africa, Sierra Leone, and Australia.

The report provides an exclusive global topology of fancy colour diamond discovery sites, emphasizing how geographic scarcity further fuels their exclusivity. As exploration becomes more challenging and existing mines near depletion, experts suggest the value of these diamonds will only climb higher.

Auction Houses and Red Carpets Fuel the Craze

While their origins lie deep within the Earth, fancy colour diamonds now shine brightest on the world’s most glamorous stages. From high-end exhibitions to red carpet premieres and elite auctions, these chromatic stones have become fixtures in the ultra-luxury ecosystem.

Notable recent sales highlight this escalating appeal. In May 2022, Sotheby’s Geneva auctioned the Mediterranean Blue—a 10.03-carat Fancy Vivid blue diamond—for an astonishing $21.4 million, or $2.1 million per carat. The same auction season saw a lineup of colored gems rivaling any artistic exhibition: a 2.02-carat Fancy Vivid blue diamond ($1.4–$1.8 million), a 2.61-carat Fancy green-blue diamond ring ($250,000–$350,000), and a 26.19-carat Fancy Vivid yellow diamond ring ($750,000–$1 million).

Even historical stones continue to set benchmarks. The 59.60-carat CTF Pink Star remains the most expensive diamond ever sold, fetching $71.2 million at a Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction in 2017. “There are very few important pink diamonds over 20 carats. It is less likely that we will see more important sizable pinks,” noted Tom Moses, Executive Vice President of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Paris Couture Week and the Future of Fancy Colour Diamonds

As Paris Couture Week unfolds, the world’s top fashion houses are expected to incorporate a vivid palette of fancy colour diamonds into their latest high jewellery offerings. Red carpet attendees, fashion editors, and industry titans are likely to be seen donning an array of gem-studded masterpieces—each one a bold statement of style, rarity, and luxury.

According to Roy Safit, CEO of the Fancy Color Research Foundation, “While global trade anxieties have created caution across luxury sectors, the fancy colour diamond market remained impressively composed. The data shows a contained, strategic repositioning. It speaks to the market’s growing maturity and the defensive appeal of vivid colour diamonds.”

Why Fancy Colour Diamonds Are the Ultimate Investment and Expression of Identity

The consistent rise in demand, coupled with diminishing supply, makes fancy colour diamonds one of the most recession-proof and emotionally charged investments in the world of luxury. Beyond their financial resilience, they offer a personal connection to natural history, a slice of geological wonder worn against the skin.

As global economies adjust to shifting political climates and environmental challenges, more collectors and investors are viewing these gems not only as beautiful adornments but as heritage assets. Each stone tells a story—of its mineral formation deep beneath the Earth’s crust, of human ingenuity in extracting and cutting it, and of the unique taste and identity of the individual who wears it.

Looking ahead, experts anticipate even more fervent activity in this category, especially as high fashion continues to embrace colour and individuality. As new generations of luxury buyers enter the market, driven by a desire for uniqueness and sustainability, fancy colour diamonds are poised to become the crown jewels of modern adornment. From auction records to wedding aisles and runway collections, these natural wonders are more than fleeting trends—they are eternal expressions of rarity, beauty, and value that transcend culture and time.
