Gems and Jewelry News: The Indian gem and jewellery sector has achieved a significant regulatory victory with the introduction of a nationwide standard that formally defines how diamonds can be described and marketed across the country. The move is being viewed as a watershed moment for consumer protection and trade clarity in one of the world’s most influential jewellery markets.

Under the new framework, the term diamond is now legally reserved for natural stones only, ending years of confusion caused by inconsistent naming practices. Issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards, the regulation establishes uniform terminology that applies to physical retail, digital marketplaces, and cross border trade, forcing sellers to be far more transparent than before.

New definitions reshape the market

At the heart of the regulation is IS 19469 2025, which draws a clear line between natural diamonds and laboratory grown alternatives. When the word diamond appears on its own, it must refer exclusively to a natural gemstone. Descriptors such as natural, real, genuine or precious may be used, while phrases like mined diamond or earth-mined diamond are expressly banned. This Gems and Jewelry News report highlights how online listings were a major driver behind the need for reform.

Laboratory grown stones must now be immediately disclosed using only the terms laboratory grown diamond or laboratory created diamond. The standard also blocks marketing language that implies equivalence with natural stones, prohibiting words such as nature’s earth friendly, conflict free, pure or cultured in consumer facing descriptions.

Industry backing and enforcement

The Natural Diamond Council has publicly endorsed the standard, describing it as a decisive step toward restoring confidence in diamond purchasing. Managing director Richa Singh stressed that clarity in terminology is essential for maintaining long-term trust between retailers and buyers in a rapidly evolving market.

The Natural Diamond Council will work alongside regulators and trade bodies to support enforcement and education, ensuring jewelers understand both compliance obligations and the commercial impact of the changes.

Wider implications for global trade

India’s decision is already being closely watched by other manufacturing and trading hubs. With India responsible for a vast share of global diamond cutting and polishing, the standard is expected to influence international disclosure norms and marketing practices well beyond its borders.

The regulation sends a strong signal that transparency is no longer optional, reinforcing the distinction between natural rarity and technological innovation while protecting informed consumer choice in an increasingly complex gemstone landscape. This measured but firm approach may ultimately stabilize pricing confidence and safeguard the long-term reputation of natural diamonds in global markets, offering a clearer future for traders, manufacturers and buyers alike.
