The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) says international competition is rapidly moving beyond beauty, craftsmanship, branding, and price. As highlighted in this Bangkok Gems News report, consumers and trading partners are increasingly examining where materials originate, how jewelry is manufactured, and whether companies operate responsibly throughout their supply chains.

Responsibility Becomes Part of Luxury

Sumet Prasongpongchai, Director of GIT, said the organization aims to provide a platform where government representatives, specialists, and gem and jewelry entrepreneurs can exchange views about changes shaping the industry.

The emerging message is that attractive products alone may no longer guarantee competitiveness. Environmental responsibility, business ethics, transparency, and good governance are becoming important components of a jewelry brand’s reputation and commercial value.

This transformation is effectively turning “responsibility” into another characteristic of luxury. While consumers traditionally concentrated on design, precious materials, exclusivity, and brand image, many now want to understand the story behind a piece of jewelry.

That includes the origins of gemstones and precious metals, manufacturing practices, environmental impact, and the conduct of companies involved in bringing products to market.

Standards Help Thai Companies Adapt

GIT has been helping Thai businesses prepare for these changing expectations through standards and operating guidelines.

These include the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) standard, GIT Standard 3001 promoting operations based on the Know Your Counterparty principle, and the Carbon Footprint for Organization standard.

Such initiatives are intended to help more Thai jewelry businesses respond to evolving international regulations while strengthening confidence among overseas buyers and increasingly sustainability-conscious consumers.

Consumers Ask What Lies Behind Jewelry

Tanong Leelawatthanasuk, Deputy Director (Technical) of GIT, said consumer behavior is also changing significantly. Buyers are no longer asking only whether jewelry is beautiful; increasingly, they want to know what values stand behind the product.

Luxury jewelry could therefore evolve from being predominantly a symbol of wealth and social status into something that communicates identity, personal beliefs, craftsmanship, provenance, and responsibility.

Tanong said entrepreneurs should not simply comply with regulations mechanically. Instead, responsibility can become part of brand positioning, with creativity and design transforming sustainable practices into additional commercial value.

For Thailand’s globally recognized gem and jewelry sector, this transformation could create substantial opportunities. Businesses successfully combining craftsmanship, responsible sourcing, transparency, innovation, and compelling storytelling may find themselves particularly well positioned as international buyers redefine what makes jewelry genuinely luxurious and desirable.
